Retrofitting steel damaged building equipped with a steel shear wall and SMA bolts

This preliminary study investigates the behaviour of implemented SSWs in the scaled steel frame that improved with SMA bolts as beam-to-column and SSW-to-beam connections subjected to cyclic load. Regarding the literature review, an idea of using bolts made of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) is proposed. One of the key abilities of SMAs is their ability to exhibit large strains and recoverable deformations. This unique property makes SMAs ideal for use in a wide range of applications including steel connections that have advantages over regular steel bolts to withstand large deformations without breaking or losing their strength. The main purpose of preliminary study is to retrofit the steel damaged building that experienced permanent deformation. In the first stage, the behaviour of steel frame that experienced different values of Residual Drift (i.e. 0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) and retrofitted with Steel Shear Wall having different thicknesses (i.e. 1, 2, and 3 mm) are investigated. In the next step, the most effective thickness of SSW will be take into account, and some of the regular bolts of connections will be replaced by SMA bolts to improve the recentering ability of the proposed SSW. Then, the efficient connection type is proposed for the connection of SSW taking into account the influence of RD values and SMA bolts. To justify the effectiveness of SMA bolts, different conditions are considered and the result of the best condition is evaluated. The goal is to reduce the risk of future damages or local collapses under dynamic loads, including earthquakes and mining tremors, while the proposed strategy can reduce the cost of retrofitting due to the least changes in the building and implementation time. Moreover, by increasing the reliability and performance of the retrofitted damaged structures, the proposed retrofitting strategy can prevent the costs imposed after the earthquake, including the environmental costs to eliminate the remaining destroyed materials.
