Integrated approach 3M (Macrophytes-Microbiome-Modelling) to elucidate mechanisms of bioenergy production and micropollutants transformation in Floating Treatment Wetlands combined with Microbial Fuel Cells

The project will be focused on Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTW) integrated with Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC). The purpose of integration of MFC into FTW is improving remediation effects coupled with simultaneous recovery of bioelectricity. This approach is in line with the circular economy concept and Sustainable Development Goals. However, since the method is in the infancy stage of development, there is a number of research questions to be answered. One of these questions, which has not been reported in scientific literature so far, is transformation of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals in FTW integrated with MFC. The objective of the project is to investigate the mechanisms underpinning bioenergy generation and transformation of selected micropollutants in FTW reactors integrated with MFC (FTW-MFC). A novel research approach will be applied by combining analyses of biochemical and functional aspects of FTW-MFC (hydraulic retention time, organic loading rate, carbon source, pH, temperature), comprehensive studies of macrophytes and microbiome, impact of artificial light and micropollutants on bio-components of FTW-MFC reactors, and mathematical modeling/simulation and sensitivity analysis. The “3M” approach, which integrates analyses of macrophytes, microbiome and mathematical modelling of the processes of transformations of nutrients and selected micropollutants (arsenic, heavy metals: Cd and Cr and pharmaceuticals: azithroimicin, remdesivir and acitominophen) in FTW-MFC is proposed.
