Conflicting Demands of Sustainable Digital Transformation

Abstract

Chapter Nine goes into the paradoxes of digital transformation, aiming to explain the complexities of implementing digital transformation. In the context of exploring paradoxes, this chapter unveils the contradictory nature of sustainable digital transformation, analyzing how the balance between innovation and sustainability generates unique threats and opportunities. The novelty of undertaking this chapter relates to determining the paradoxical nature of sustainable digital transformation, its understanding, and what areas are included in it, based on the semi-structured interviews with experts from various European countries. The results of the study include both an understanding and identification of the paradoxes that exist in the process of sustainable digital transformation and the relationships that exist between the different areas of sustainability in the company that can create paradoxical tensions. The results contribute to the understanding of the creation of digital deployments and provide a basis for further research into the creation of a sustainable digital transformation strategy. In the intersection of technological progress and sustainable development, this study serves as a guide, ensuring that the digital evolution of enterprises correlates with the overall goals of social well-being, environmental responsibility, and economic viability.
