Improving denitrification efficiency at the "Wschod" WWTP in Gdansk (Poland) - effects of different carbon sources
Abstract
Moreover, the adaptation period of biomass to methanol was also investigated in a bench scale A2/O system. The results of this study indicate the industrial wastewater from a distillery as a potential alternative for methanol. In the "conventional" batch tests with the industrial wastewater, single NURs were observed ranging from 4.80 to 5.15 g N/(kg VSS·h). These values corresponded closely to the rates associated with the utilization of readily biodegradable COD in the settled wastewater. Such high NURs were not attained with methanol as the carbon source even with the adapted biomass in a bench scale A2/O system. In this case, the NURs stabilized at the level > 4.0 g N/(kg VSS⋅h) after a 2-week adaptation period. When the NURs were measured during anoxic P uptake, the P uptake rates did not appear to be adversely affected by the addition of any of the carbon sources.
