Membrane-SPME the best 'green' sample preparation technique for the gas chromatographic determination polar organic pollutants in polar media

Abstract

One of the most popular technique for sample preparation, which fulfill requirements of green analytical chemistry, is solid phase microextraction (SPME). Because of the undoubted advantages of SPME technique, solvent-free character of the extraction process and the enormous potential in analytical practice, a series of studies has been undertaken to develop new technical solutions, where improving the sensitivity and the extraction efficiency are the main goals to achieve. This is particularly important in the case of extraction polar analytes present in polar medi. One of the concepts is to separate the polar retention medium from the sample by means of a membrane (M-SPME). In such a system, the glass fibre is coated with two layers of sorbent: an inner layer of highly polar polyethylene glycol (PEG), and an outer, hydrophobic, nonpolar layer of PDMS, which acts as the membrane separating the polar sorbent from the sample. These double-layered fibres have low cost, are thermally resistant, so thermal desorption of adsorbed analytes. Moreover, it excludes risk of dissolving of polar material of coating in the sample matrix. In our studies, this system has been implemented in to SPME technique. The results show that extraction with this new fiber is several times more efficient than with commercially available, polar fiber. This therefore provides an opportunity to overcome the difficulties involved in sampling polar analytes from media with a polar matrix composition.
