Artykuł wprowadza do Specjalnej Sekcji pt. Technologies for large scale and complex systems, zamieszczonej w czasopiśmie Annual Reviews in Control, Vol. 32, Issue 1 wydanego w kwietniu 2008. Specjalna sekcja zawiera artykuły będące rozszerzeniem referatów plenarnych wygłoszonych podczas 11th IFAC Symposium on Large Scale Complex Systems, które odbyło się w Gdańsku, Lipiec 2007r.
