Static Load Test on Instrumented Pile – Field Data and Numerical Simulations

Abstract

For some time (since 8-10 years in Poland) a special static load tests on instrumented piles are carried out. Such studies are usually of a scientific nature and provide detailed quantitative data on the load transfer into the ground and characteristics of particular soil layers interaction with a pile shaft and pile base. Deep knowledge about the pile-subsoil interaction can be applied for a various design purposes, e.g. numerical simulations. With the experience of more than 50 pile tests, research team developed an original method for the interpretation of measurement results. Experiences conclude that these results are affected by several factors such as heterogeneity of the pile cross section, the quality of concrete along the pile, dependence of the concrete modulus on stress and strain values and presence of so-called residual forces in the pile core. In order to increase credibility and reliability of the test results, these influences and problems should be identified and solved. The aim of the paper is present the influence of pile shaft geometric and material imperfections on the interpretation of static load test on instrumented concrete pile. Authors presented their own, iterative method for pile core stiffness determination.
