Temperature influence on tire/road noise evaluated by the drum method

Abstract

Ambient air and road surface temperatures substantially affect the road vehicle noise emission. The temperature influence on tire/road noise depends mainly on tire-road combination. It is different for dense and porous pavements, for bituminous and cement ones. It differs also depending on tires. The correction procedures for temperature effect are still under consideration and preparation. Laboratory experiment was prepared to establish correlation between noise emission and temperature for a set of 12 selected tires. The tire/road noise measurements were performed for 2 sets of ISO reference tires with different hardness, 6 other passenger tires, including the tires specially designed for electric vehicles, and 2 truck tires. The tires were tested on drum facilities equipped with 3 different replica road surfaces within the air temperature range from 6ºC to 36ºC with a step of 10ºC. Additionally the tire/road noise emitted during the tire warming time was acquired and analyzed. Both ambient air and replica road surface temperatures were taken into consideration. The results and findings of this experiment are presented and discussed in the paper.
