Abstract
What are the qualities of temporary architectural objects that make them helpful instruments for evolving the image of contemporary urban space? Six hypotheses provide rationales for why current temporary architecture seems to be a remedy for dysfunctional city structures. The research was limited to the temporary architectural objects constructed in open-air city zones, including the architecture of events. The temporary objects' architectural qualities are presented in the context of local identity, international image of the place, quality of urban life, innovative solutions and aspects of the economic picture. The results of the research suggest that temporary architectural objects may: - enhance the competitiveness of urban space as a global tourist destination; - revise existing flawed urban structures and indicate direction for future improvement; - contribute new aesthetic values due to their distinctive architecture; - improve public space utility by completing missing functions; - strengthen feelings of local identity; - increase the economic potential of the space in its surroundings. The increasing amount of temporary objects in urban space is the architectural reaction to the ubiquitous trend of adapting the city to contemporary society and global market demands. Temporary architecture brings liberty to creation; allowing experiments in the urban space with relatively low-cost interventions that become the most fascinating and inventive structures of the moment.
