Variable-fidelity response feature surrogates for accelerated statistical analysis and yield estimation of compact microwave components
PublicationAccounting for manufacturing tolerances is an essential part of a reliable microwave design process. Yet, quantification of geometry and/or material parameter uncertainties is challenging at the level of full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation models. This is due to inherently high cost of EM analysis and massive simulations necessary to conduct the statistical analysis. Here, a low-cost and accurate yield estimation procedure...

Trawl-Door Shape Optimization with 3D CFD Models and Local Surrogates
PublicationDesign and optimization of trawl-doors are key factors in minimizing the fuel consumption of fishing vessels. This paper discusses optimization of the trawl-door shapes using high-fidelity 3D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models. The accurate 3D CFD models are computationally expensive and, therefore, the direct use of traditional optimization algorithms, which often require a large number of evaluations, may be prohibitive....

Small Antenna Design Using Surrogate-Based Optimization
PublicationIn this work, design of small antennas using efficient numerical optimization is investigated. We exploit variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulations and the adaptively adjusted design specifications (AADS) technique. Combination of these methods allows us to simultaneously adjust multiple geometry parameters of the antenna structure of interest in a computationally feasible manner, leading to substantial reduction of the...

Topological modifications for performance improvement and size reduction of wideband antenna structures
PublicationCompact antennas belong to the key components of modern communication systems. Their miniaturization is often achieved by introducing appropriate topological changes such as simple ground plane slots or tapered feeds. More sophisticated modifications are rarely considered in the literature because they normally lead to significant increase of the number of tunable parameters, which makes the antenna design process more challenging....

Three-objective antenna optimization by means of kriging surrogates and domain segmentation
PublicationIn this paper, an optimization framework for multi-objective design of antenna structures is discussed which exploits data-driven surrogates, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, response correction techniques for design refinement, as well as generalized domain segmentation. The last mechanism is introduced to constrain the design space region subjected to sampling, which permits reduction of the number of training data samples...

Statistical analysis and robust design of circularly polarized antennas using sequential approximate optimization
PublicationIn the paper, reliable yield estimation and tolerance-aware design optimization of circular polarization (CP) antennas is discussed. We exploit auxiliary kriging interpolation models established in the vicinity of the nominal design in order to speed up the process of statistical analysis of the antenna structure at hand. Sequential approximate optimization is then applied to carry out robust design of the antenna, here, oriented...

Size reduction of ultra-wideband antennas with efficiency and matching constraints
PublicationAntenna design is a multifaceted task that involves handling of various performance figures concerning both electrical performance of the structure as well as its geometry. Simultaneous control of several objectives through rigorous optimization is very challenging and virtually impossible through conventional approaches such as parameter sweeping. In this work, we investigate size reduction of ultra‐wideband antenna structures...

Time-Gating method with automatic calibration for accurate measurements of electrically small antenna radiation patterns in Non-Anechoic environments
PublicationNon-anechoic sites represent a cheap alternative to measurements of antennas in dedicated facilities. However, due to a high noise—from the external EM signal sources and multipath interferences—the quality of radiation patterns obtained in non-anechoic conditions is poor. The characteristics can be corrected using a time-gating method (TGM), which involves filtering of the noise based on temporal analysis of the measured signals....

The Way One Defines Specification Matters: On the Performance Criteria for Efficient Antenna Optimization in Aggregated Bi-Objective Setups
PublicationDesign of antenna structures for real-world applications is a challenging task that often involves addressing multiple design requirements at a time. Popular solution approaches to this class of problems include utilization of composite objectives. Although configuration of such functions has a significant effect on the cost and performance of the optimization, their specific structure is normally determined based on engineering...

Structure and computationally-efficient simulation-driven design of compact UWB monopole antenna
PublicationIn this letter, a structure of a small ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna, its design optimization procedure as well as experimental validation are presented. According to our approach, antenna compactness is achieved by means of a meander line for current path enlargement as well as the two parameterized slits providing additional degrees of freedom that help to ensure good impedance matching. For the sake of reliability, the...

Strategies for computationally feasible multi-objective simulation-driven design of compact RF/microwave components
PublicationMulti-objective optimization is indispensable when possible trade-offs between various (and usually conflicting) design objectives are to be found. Identification of such design alternatives becomes very challenging when performance evaluation of the structure/system at hand is computationally expensive. Compact RF and microwave components are representative examples of such a situation: due to highly compressed layouts and considerable...

Size-Reduction-Oriented Design of Compact CPW-Fed UWB Monopole Antenna
PublicationA structure and design optimization of compact CPW-fed UWB monopole antenna is presented. Explicit size reduction through constrained numerical optimization of all relevant geometry parameters of the structure leads to a very small footprint of only 321 mm2. At the same time, a very wide antenna bandwidth is achieved from 3.1 GHz to 17 GHz.
