Marta Walkusz PhD - a librarian and researcher with extensive experience in music librarianship and the history of music publishing. Since 2004, she has been professionally affiliated with the Library of the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, where she has served as Director since 2018, following her promotion that same year to the rank of Certified Senior Librarian (kustosz dyplomowany).
A graduate of the same Academy, where she completed two specializations at the Faculty of Composition and Theory of Music. In 2008, she completed postgraduate studies in Information Science and Library Science at the Faculty of Philology and History of the University of Gdańsk. Between 2015 and 2019, she pursued interdisciplinary doctoral studies in the humanities at the University of Warsaw. In 2020, she was awarded a PhD in the humanities for her dissertation entitled Warsaw Music Prints Published between 1875 and 1918 and Preserved in Gdańsk Libraries, written under the supervision of Dr. hab. Jacek Puchalski at the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies.
Her early research interests focused on various aspects of academic librarianship, including copyright issues related to the access and reproduction of collections, the role of scholarly information services in academic libraries, and strategies for library promotion within higher education institutions. As a result, she published several papers concerning the activities of music academy libraries in Poland.
From 2017 to 2022, her research concentrated on Warsaw music prints from the years 1875–1918 preserved in Gdańsk's scientific libraries, with particular focus on their bibliographic characteristics, provenance, and historical-publishing context. These studies have resulted in several scholarly publications, including articles in peer-reviewed Polish journals and in the international journal Fontes Artis Musicae.
Her current research interests focus on dispersed and intentional collections of music materials held by the Library of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, with special emphasis on reconstructing their provenance, identifying their original functions in the lives of their collectors, and understanding their present role within the academic library context.
In her daily professional work, she specializes in cataloguing music prints, sound documents, and ephemera, working on both current acquisitions and retrospective conversion projects. She serves as the library’s system librarian and regularly participates in training sessions and conferences organized by the NUKAT Center. Her cataloguing practice has also led to further research focused on the precise dating of music prints and the identification and systematization of the publishing output of Polish and European music publishers.
