Model Areas for Removal of Pharmaceutical Substances in the South Baltic

Celem projektu jest współdziałanie lokalnych/regionalnych spółek komunalnych odpowiedzialnych za oczyszczanie ścieków, a także instytucji badawczych specjalizujących się w tej dziedzinie z czterech krajów leżących w zlewni Morza Bałtyckiego (Polska, Litwa, Niemcy, Szwecja) .

MORPHEUS is financed by Intereg South Baltic and will run from 2017 to 2019.
Kristianstad University is Lead Partner of the project, which includes seven partners from four Baltic Regions:

- Mecklenburg - Tränckner J., Kaiser A., University of Rostock, Germany,
- Klaipeda - Garnaga-Budrė G., Lithuanian EPA; Langas V., Klaipeda University, Lithuania
- Pomerania - Luczkiewicz A., Fudala-Ksiazek S., Jankowska K., Szopinska M., Gdansk University of Technology, Poland

Initially the project will obtain information on drug consumption in the coastal regions of Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Sweden. Through modelling an estimate of how much ends up in the recipients will be achieved. At the same time water samples from the different countries will be analyzed to verify and adapt the model.
Additionally the treatment plant status in the four regions will be inventoried. By applying the combine information on drug consumption by the chemical analyses, any correlation between consumption, existing treatment technology and emissions in the different regions is anticipated to be identified.
Our main goal is then to propose recommendations for action and concrete guidelines for investment in advanced treatment technologies in selected regional sewage treatment plants.
