The European Commission indicates that the modernization of selected MWWTPs is essential by introducing more advanced treatment technologies. The application of AOPs (Advanced Oxidation Processes) as a step of water purification reduces the toxicity of the environmental contaminants and improves their biodegradation. Especially in combination with biofilm reactors. The Partners from GUT in Poland and AU in Denmark have experience in developing AOPs, which combined with biodegradation, can efficiently degrade emerging contaminants in water.
Another challenge is the presence of emerging pollutants in sediments. The challenges are related to lack of wastewater treatment quality as inter Baltic pollution affects all the related Baltic countries' public health, including drinking water quality and cause-related health failure effects.
Pharmaceutical residues are a danger to cross-border shores, accumulating into sediments and fish and other water organisms, which can end in each of the border countries' in food and the human organism.
Currently, there is little recognition at the social and policy level of the potential risks of emerging pollutants to human health. Therefore, the fundamental challenge within this project is to increase awareness among different target groups to understand the need of introducing additional advanced processes for removing emerging micropollutants. In this regard, the project aims to show strategies in improving the quality of waters by new alternative processes.All of the activities in this project for improving the quality of BSR waters by advanced processes to challenge emerging micropollutants will be run according to the ADKAR (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, Reinforcement) change management model. The University of Tartu and Aarhus University will participate in a project as a Partners. The supplementary experience of each Partner gives the possibility to propose the best available technology according to cases in individual WWTPs. Additionally, the newly created network of experts could contribute an important voice in policy making processes at HELCOM level. The project will establish discussion with stakeholders eg. management of wastewater treatment plants and their organisations, pharmacy companies (eg. Polpharma in PL), students from the Chemical Faculty.
