Probabilistic analysis of the mechanical response variation of a tensegrity dome due to geometric and loading imperfections, with an estimation of the dome's sensitivity and operational reliability in terms of ultimate and serviceability limit states

The main objective of the planned research is the probabilistic analysis of the change in the mechanical response of the tensegral dome caused by geometrical imperfections in the position of structural nodes, the changes associated with the tensile strength of the tendons, and the position of the compressed elements (posts). An additional goal is to determine the acceptable set of mechanical response of the dome, depending on the amplitudes of geometric imperfections, due to the limit states: load capacity and serviceability, and the possible change in the related operational reliability of the tensegral dome structure. A tensegrity dome with Fuller's nodal design will be considered. A series of tests has been planned in which the impact of deformation of the ideal dome geometry on the change in mechanical response will be analysed. Both the tendons and the dome posts will be alternately assembled as elements with an imperfection of +5cm, 0cm, -5cm. The tests will be divided into (a) the analysis of the impact of changes in the vertical position of the posts, caused by kinematic inputs, (b) analysis of the impact of changes in the position of the posts in the top view, caused by changes in the tension of the tendons, (c) analysis of the impact of the lack of symmetry of the load, imposed by attaching weights. The extreme vertical displacement of each ring and key will be the monitored response. First, a sensitivity analysis of the dome model will be performed, followed by a full analysis of the response variable. In the target studies, assuming a probabilistic model, the locations of key nodes and their loads will be modified pointwise (direct Monte Carlo simulation), in groups (according to the assumptions of directed sampling techniques) or in the entire system (according to the generated random fields). This will allow the reliability calculation of the dome structure. From the Gdańsk University of Technology standpoint, the project has three meanings. Firstly, it will contribute to the development of testing similar structures and elements. It will also be an interesting research topic, which may result in an increase in the number of publications in reputable scientific periodicals. Thirdly, managing the project may be an important element of the scientific biography of the author of the application in the final habilitation procedure - in the case of its success, the scientific independence of the Faculty will increase
