The DEMS (Developing E-marketing Skills for the Business Market) project is conducted in order to reduce the serious skills gap in digital marketing skills, dramatic especially for SMEs. The activities focus on 1. the Definition of the precise skills needed, 2. proposing transnational Digital marketing curricula, 3. Digitalization of business teachers and 4. Creation of five online digital marketing courses for business HEI students all over Europe.
Globalization and digital transformation are changing business environments at an unprecedented pace. While Business professionals are expected to be increasingly flexible in their communication and ability to manage change, they are also supposed to apply business data and capitalize on digital media and platforms. This concerns especially professionals in communication, sales, and marketing, as 30% of organizational media budgets are currently spent in digital channels. 30% of all companies allocate more than 50% of their budgets to digital media. While bigger organizations and industries have harnessed digital measures, many small and medium-sized companies are reported to lag in this progression.
As a consequence of digital transformation, the demand for a digitally skilled workforce has grown steadily in sales and marketing positions in companies. On the European level, this concerns approximately 4-5 million professionals. Yet, it is commonly reported that employers have serious problems in finding a skilled workforce, or they will find a disappointing gap between their expectations and students’ digital preparedness. Although business educational institutions have been encouraged to provide the graduates with more versatile skills in using digital platforms and tools, it is evident that only a few of them have seized this field, and thus, much remains to be done in training professionals with digital skills required by SMEs.
The DEMS project tackles the lack of digital marketing skills in a holistic manner. In the first phase, the need for digital marketing skills is updated by a survey directed to SME owners and marketing managers in four European countries. Based on this understanding, a curricula proposal for Digital marketing will be created.
