Volunteering in social crises: between episodic and organized help. Perspectives of nongovernmental organizations and volunteers from Italy and Poland
Social support mobilization could have been observed during the last social crises in Europe (COVID-19 pandemic, migration crises). This mobilization often took place as spontaneous, episodic volunteering. Such help was not regulated by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), which has its advantages and threats for those who give and receive help and NGOs. The project aims to find correlates of engagement in episodic or formal volunteering during a crisis. It will also be checked how NGO representatives perceive episodic volunteering in the context of NGO efficacy. Data will be obtained in Italy and Poland from two sources: a questionnaire study (N = 450) done on the general population and written interviews (N = 50) with volunteer coordinators. The results will enable us to understand better how the social support mobilization process can occur during crises and how the cooperation of people and NGOs during such times can be supported.
