Management of bio fraction waste for two-stage biohydrogen production with simultaneous treatment of gaseous streams with green solvents

The scientific aim of the project is to determine the effect of divesrified process parameters on the efficiency of biohydrogen generation via biological processes. The project covers research with the use of model bio fraction waste in order to prepare the fermentation batch by the means of chemical hydrolysis methods. Bio waste fractions amount can be egual up to 15% of the total waste amount received at the landfill. Lignocellulose and starch based raw materials are often applied in the investigations regarding biohydrogen generation using dark fermentation microorganisms of anaerobic digestion. The literature lacks information regarding model mixtures of lignocellulose and starch based biomass, while the research are carried on the basis of a single type of raw material. This type of waste frequently arises, therefore the authors see a certain niche in the anaerobic digestion analysis carried for mixtures corresponding to real mixtures. The matrix of chemical compounds resulting from pretreatment of mentioned mixtures may be more complex. It should be pointed that there are no data concerning this topic in the literature thus the obtained results will complete the actual state of knowledge. Dark hydrogen fermentation involves the conversion of simple sugars to hydrogen, carbon dioxide and ethanol or organic acids (most often these are acetic, lactic and butyric acids. The post-fermentation broth containing organic acids may be next applied in photofermentation with the application of microorganisms able to convert organic acids to hydrogen. In order to decrease the COD of remaining broth, biorefining, methanization and microbiological electrolysis are considered. Fermentation broth contains unused remnants of monosugars. Selection of chemical conditions, allowing to carry a conversion of the remained sugars to certain chemical compounds is planned as a biorefing aspect of the investigation. It is possible to convert remaining xylose and glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), levulinic acid (LA) and furfural (F) in acidic conditions. Successful results in this approach would enable the authors to synthetise the precursors of deep eutectic solvents, that are planned to be applied in the purification of the generated gas streams containg biohydrogen and other components. The authors propose investions on a multistep bioconversion process allowing to obtain purified biohydrogen stream generated during dark fermentation and photofermentation.
