Abstract

The phenomenon of potassium efflux (GGKE - glutathione-gated potassium efflux) from the calls of activated sludge bacteria in the result of peroxyacetic acid (CH3CO3H) dosing was investigated. Addition of the strong oxidant to the activated sludge environment caused activation of the defense mechanisms of bacterial cells, related to glutathione transformations, which resulted in the significant increase of potassium ions concentration. The in batch investigations were performed at aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with similar activated sludge concentrations (9.04 - 9.33 gMLSS/l) and at similar temperature (14-15oC). No significant changes in potassium efflux at aerobic and anaerobic conditions were observed. The increase of K+ ions concentration was observed for 15-20 minutes. The unit potassium efflux from activated sludge was more less proportional to the dose of peroxyacetic acid (0.12 - 3.58 mg CH3CO3H/gMLSS) and changed from approximately 0.15 mg K+/gMLSS (for the lowest doses of peroxyacetic acid and a few minutes reaction time) to approximately 4.5 mg K+/gMLSS for high doses of peroxyacetic acid and 20 minutes reaction time.
