  • The Imaging of Gdansk Bay Seabed by Using Side Sonar

This paper is mainly aimed at presentation of an impact of environmental conditions on imaging accuracy by using hydro-acoustic systems in waters of a high non-uniformity of spatial distribution of hydrological parameters. Impact of refraction on erroneous estimation of range, in case of wave radiation into water under a large angle, like in side sonars or multi-beam echo-sounders, is especially important. In this paper seasonal...

  • Acoustic imaging of selected areas of Gdansk Bay with the aid of parametric echosounder and side-scan sonar

The article presents and analyses the data recorded during sounding of the Gdansk Bay seabed with the aid of a parametric echosounder and a side-scan sonar. The accuracy of seabed structure examination, as a condition for obtaining valuable results, requires correct configuration of echolocation devices and proper calibration of peripheral devices, such as the survey unit geographical position sensor – GPS, the navigation unit,...

  • Influence of Natural Conditions on the Imaging of the Bottom of the Gdańsk Bay by Means of the Side Scan Sonar

The interest in underwater resources is the reason for the development of modern hydroacoustic systems, including side sonars, which find numerous applications such as: research of seabed morphology and sediment characteristics, preparation of sea sediment maps, and even in special cases of biocenoses such as sea grass meadows, detection of specific targets at the bottom such as shipwrecks, mines, identification of suitable sites...

  • Underwater Acoustic Imaging of the Sea

    Publication

Acoustic waves are a carrier of information mainly in environments where the use of other types of waves, for example electromagnetic waves, is limited. The term acoustical imaging is widely used in the ultrasonic engineering to imaging areas in which the acoustic waves propagate. In particular, ultrasound is widely used in the visualization of human organs - ultrasonography (Nowicki, 2010). Expanding the concept, acoustical imaging...

  • Seafloor relief reconstruction from side scan sonar data

    Publication

Side scan sonar is one of the most widely used imaging systems in the underwater environment. It is relatively cheap and easy to deploy, in comparison with more powerful sensors. Although side scan sonar does not provide seafloor bathymetry directly, its records are directly related to seafloor images. In the paper, the method for 3D seafloor relief reconstruction from side scan sonar data is presented. The method is based on the...

  • Application of Shape From Shading Technique for Side Scan Sonar Images

Side scan sonar (SSS) is one of the most widely used imaging systems in the underwater environment. It is relatively cheap and easy to deploy in comparison with more powerful sensors like multibeam echosounder or synthetic aperture sonar. Although, the SSS does not provide directly the seafloor bathymetry measurements. Its outputs are usually in a form of grey level acoustic images of seafloor. However, the analysis of such images...

  • 3D seafloor reconstruction using data from side scan and synthetic aperture sonar

    Publication

Side scan and synthetic aperture sonars are widely used imaging systems in the underwater environment. They are relatively cheap and easy to deploy, in comparison with more powerful sensors, like multibeam echosounders. Although side scan and synthetic aperture sonars does not provide seafloor bathymetry directly, their records are finally related to seafloor images. Moreover, the analysis of such images performed by human eye...

  • Selected acoustic images of the Gdansk Bay

    Publication

The main goal of the paper is to describe the results of sounding the Gdansk Bay seabed by using a parametric sub-bottom profiler, multibeam echosounder and side scan sonar. Quality of dsata obtained during trials depends interalia on a proper location of antenna to reduce influence of pitch, roll and heave motions as well as ship noise.

  • System for characterisation and multidimensional imaging of seafloor using multibeam sonar data

    Publication

Multibeam sonars are widely used in applications like high resolution bathymetry measurements, underwater object detection and imaging, etc. Also, they are the promising tool in seafloor characterisation and classification, having several advantages over conventional single beam echosounders. The proposed approach to seafloor classification relies on the combined use of three different techniques. In each of them, a set of descriptors...
