Biography
Ewa Wagner-Wysiecka is a graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdańsk University of Technology (specializing in Chemical Technology, with a focus on Inorganic Technology and a sub-specialty in Technical and Industrial Analytics). She completed her master's thesis, entitled "Identification of Contaminants in Pharmacopoeial Sulfaquinoxaline," under the supervision of Professor Jan F. Biernat. After completing her master's degree in 1997, she began her doctoral studies. Her doctoral dissertation, titled "New Macrocyclic Chromoionophores: Synthesis and Characterization of Interactions with Cations," was defended in 2002, with Professor Jan F. Biernat as her supervisor. She obtained her habilitation degree (in the field of chemical sciences, discipline: chemistry) in 2013.
Since 2002, she has been employed at the Faculty of Chemistry, initially as an assistant, then as an adjunct (2003), adjunct with habilitation (2013), associate professor (2013-2019), and since 2019 as a professor of Gdańsk University of Technology. Since 2020, she has been the head of the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Functional Materials. Since 2021, she has also been the head of the "Chemistry in Medicine" specialty within the Interdepartmental Biomedical Engineering program. She has supervised over 70 students in their diploma theses and has been the promoter of three doctoral theses, two of which received distinctions.
Her scientific interests include broadly defined supramolecular chemistry. Her research focuses on the design and synthesis of organic compounds, including macrocyclic ones, studied as molecular receptors. She investigates the nature of interactions in host-guest supramolecular systems using spectroscopic methods (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopy). Her applied research in supramolecular chemistry involves the use of molecular receptors in the construction of potentiometric and optical chemical sensors. Another area of interest is organic geochemistry, which includes studying the properties and identification of fossil, subfossil, and contemporary resins. She is an appraiser in amber, evaluating raw materials, semifinished products, and finished goods.
She is the (co-)author of over 60 scientific articles, most of which are published in journals listed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). She has also produced numerous reports for the pharmaceutical industry and provided various expert evaluations for the amber industry, museums, and other institutions domestically and internationally.
She has received the Rector's Awards from Gdańsk University of Technology for her scientific and teaching achievements. She was awarded the Medal of the Commission of National Education (2015) and the Silver Medal for Long Service (2022). She was also honored with the Medal of the President of the City of Gdańsk for her long-term work related to amber research (2014), the title of Amber Personality of the Year (2015), and the Gold Medal of Jan Kiliński for her contributions to Polish craftsmanship (2017).
She is passionate about spectroscopic methods, particularly infrared spectroscopy. Her non-scientific interests include ancient history, belles-lettres, and good crime novels.
