Separation of bacteria in UF process

Description

Large quantities of water are used in car washing, so it is necessary to recycle the water, which is made possible by membrane filtration. FP100 (100 kDa) membranes have been used to treat car wash wastewater by ultrafiltration (UF). With time of operation, the properties of the membranes change. The membranes need to be cleaned periodically to prevent performance degradation.  E. coli bacteria were used to determine how the composition of chemicals used to membrane wash affects the membrane performance.

It was investigated whether progressive damage to the membranes would impair the retention of bacteria that are present in car-wash wastewater. CFU - colony forming unit

TMP – transmembrane pressure (driving force of the UF process)

P3 Ultrasil 11 – Alkaline cleaner (pH=12) recommended by PCI for washing of membranes

LMH – Permeate flux calculated as litres from 1 square metre of membrane in 1 hour.

Bar = 0.1 MPa (pressure)
