  • Nonadditivity of quantum and classical capacities for entanglement breaking multiple-access channels and the butterfly network
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2010

We analyze quantum network primitives which are entanglement breaking. We show superadditivity of quantum and classical capacity regions for quantum multiple-access channels and the quantum butterfly network. Since the effects are especially visible at high noise they suggest that quantum information effects may be particularly helpful in the case of the networks with occasional high noise rates. The present effects provide a qualitative...

  • On thermal stability of topological qubit in Kitaev's 4D model
    Publication

    - OPEN SYSTEMS & INFORMATION DYNAMICS - Year 2010

We analyse stability of the four-dimensional Kitaev model-a candidate for scalable quantum memory - in finite temperature within the weak coupling Markovian limit. It is shown that, below a critical temperature, certain topological qubit observables X and Z possess relaxation times exponentially long in the size of the system. Their construction involves polynomial in system size algorithm which uses as an input the results of...

  • Quantum superadditivity in linear optics networks: Sending bits via multiple-access Gaussian channels
    Publication

Superadditivity effects of communication capacities are known in the case of discrete variable quantum channels. We describe the continuous variable analog of one of these effects in the framework of Gaussian multiple access channels (MACs). Classically, superadditivity-type effects are strongly restricted: For example, adding resources to one sender is never advantageous to other senders in sending their respective information...

  • Sudden death of effective entanglement
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2010

Sudden death of entanglement is a well-known effect resulting from the finite volume of separable states. We study the case when the observer has a limited measurement capability and analyze the effective entanglement (i.e., entanglement minimized over the output data). We show that in the well-defined system of two quantum dots monitored by single-electron transistors, one may observe a sudden death of effective entanglement when...

  • A simple test for quantum channel capacity
    Publication

Based on state and channel isomorphism we point out that semidefiniteprogramming can be used as a quick test for nonzero one-way quantum channelcapacity. This can be achieved by searching for symmetric extensions of statesisomorphic to a given quantum channel. With this method we provide examplesof quantum channels that can lead to high entanglement transmission but stillhave zero one-way capacity, in particular, regions of symmetric...

  • Broadcast copies reveal the quantumness of correlations
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2009

We study the quantumness of bipartite correlations by proposing a quantity that combines a measure of total correlations-mutual information-with the notion of broadcast copies-i.e., generally nonfactorized copies-of bipartite states. By analyzing how our quantity increases with the number of broadcast copies, we are able to classify classical, separable, and entangled states. This motivates the definition of the broadcast regularization...

  • General paradigm for distilling classical key from quantum states
    Publication

    - IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY - Year 2009

In this paper, we develop a formalism for distilling aclassical key from a quantum state in a systematic way, expandingon our previous work on a secure key from bound entanglement(Horodecki et al., 2005). More detailed proofs, discussion, andexamples are provided of the main results. Namely, we demonstratethat all quantum cryptographic protocols can be recast in away which looks like entanglement theory, with the only changebeing...

  • Inseparability criteria based on matrices of moments
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2009

Inseparability criteria for continuous and discrete bipartite quantum states based on moments of annihilationand creation operators are studied by developing the idea of Shchukin-Vogel criterion Phys. Rev. Lett. 95,230502 2005. If a state is separable, then the corresponding matrix of moments is separable too. Thus, wederive generalized criteria based on the separability properties of the matrix of moments. In particular, acriterion...

  • Multipartite secret key distillation and bound entanglement
    Publication

Recently it has been shown that quantum cryptography beyond pure entanglement distillation is possible and a paradigm for the associated protocols has been established. Here we systematically generalize the whole paradigm to the multipartite scenario. We provide constructions of new classes of multipartite bound entangled states, i.e., those with underlying twisted Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) structure and nonzero distillable...

  • Purely quantum superadditivity of classical capacities of quantum multiple access channels
    Publication

We are studying classical capacities of quantum memoryless multiaccess channels in geometric terms and we are revealing a break of additivity of the Holevo-like capacity. This effect is a purely quantum mechanical one, since, as we point out, the capacity regions of all classical memoryless multiaccess channels are additive. It is the first such effect revealed in the field of classical information transmission via quantum channels.

  • Quantum entanglement
    Publication

    - REVIEWS OF MODERN PHYSICS - Year 2009

All our former experience with application of quantum theory seems to say that what is predicted by quantum formalism must occur in the laboratory. But the essence of quantum formalism-entanglement, recognized by Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen, and Schrödinger-waited over 70 years to enter laboratories as a new resource as real as energy. This holistic property of compound quantum systems, which involves nonclassical correlations between...

New measures of multipartite entanglement are constructedbased on two definitions of multipartite information anddifferent methods of optimizing over extensions of the states. Oneis a generalization of the squashed entanglement where one takesthe mutual information of parties conditioned on the state's extensionand takes the infimum over such extensions. Additivity ofthe multipartite squashed entanglement is proved for both versionsof...

  • W-like bound entangled states and secure key distillation
    Publication

We construct multipartite entangled states with underlying W-type structuresatisfying positive partial transpose (PPT) condition under any (N −1)|1 partition. Then we showhow to distill a N-partite secure key from the states using two different methods: direct applicationof local filtering and novel random key distillation scheme in which we adopt the idea from recentresults on entanglement distillation. Open problems and possible...

  • Beyond the standard entropic inequalities: stronger scalar separability criteria and their applications

  • Entanglement-redistribution boxes
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2008

We establish a framework to study the classical-communication properties of primitive local operations assisted by classical communication which realize various redistributions of entanglement, like, e.g., entanglement swapping. On the one hand, we analyze what local operations and how much classical communication are needed to perform them. On the other hand, we investigate whether and to what extent such primitives can help to...

  • Entanglement-swapping boxes and their communication properties
    Publication

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW A - Year 2008

We pose the fundamental question of communication properties of primitives irrespectively of their implementation. To illustrate the idea we introduce the concept of entanglement-swapping boxes, i.e., we consider any quantum operations which perform entanglement swapping, not necessarily via simple quantum teleportation. We ask a question about the properties of such boxes, i.e., what local operations and how much classical communication...

  • Low-dimensional bound entanglement with one-way distillable cryptographic key
    Publication

    - IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY - Year 2008

In this paper, we provide a class of bound entangled states that have positive distillable secure key rate. The smallest state of this kind is 4 circle times 4, which shows that peculiar security contained in bound entangled states does not need high-dimensional systems. We show that for these states a positive key rate can be obtained by one-way Devetak-Winter (DW) protocol. Subsequently, the volume of bound entangled key-distillable...

  • No-local-broadcasting theorem for multipartite quantum correlations
    Publication

We prove that the correlations present in a multipartite quantum state have an operational quantum character even if the state is unentangled, as long as it does not simply encode a multipartite classical probability distribution. Said quantumness is revealed by the new task of local broadcasting, i.e., of locally sharing preestablished correlations, which is feasible if and only if correlations are stricly classical. Our operational...

    - IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY - Year 2008

In this paper, we prove unconditional security for a quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol based on distilling pbits (twisted ebits) from an arbitrary untrusted state that is claimed to contain distillable key. Our main result is that we can verify security using only public communication-via parameter estimation of the given untrusted state. The technique applies even to bound-entangled states, thus extending QKD to the regime...

    - PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS - Year 2008

Quantum cryptography enables one to verify that the state of the quantum system has not been tampered with and thus one can obtain privacy regardless of the power of the eavesdropper. All previous protocols relied on the ability to faithfully send quantum states or equivalently to share pure entanglement. Here we show this need not be the case-one can obtain verifiable privacy even through some channels which cannot be used to...
