Abstract
The study concerns heavy metal retention and transformation processes in a free water surface constructed wetland treating landfill leachate in a temperate climate. The total effectiveness of heavy metals removal in the analyzed CW was evaluated basing on heavy metals inflow and outflow concentrations. The concentrations of eight heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr, Cd) in landfill leachate (LL) and sediments were measured. The concentrations of metals in aqueous soluble and suspended fraction and bottom sediments was analyzed. Speciacion of metals deposited in the sediments into IV fractions: labile (A), carbonates and hydroxides (B), organic (C) and residual (D) was measured. The analyses were performed in two seasons: autumn (normal operation) and spring (after the winter break in operation). It was found that some metals deposited in the sediments during vegetation season are released to the aqueous phase during the winter period. The study results may contribute to the understanding of metal retention processes in a constructed wetland for landfill leachate treatment.
