Musical inspiration in contemporary architecture - to build a music and to hear an architecture

Abstract

The goal of this research is chosen from a wide range of subjects within two fields of knowledge on the crossroads between music and architecture There are many designs in modern contemporary architecture that would illustrate the relationship between music and architecture, mainly through musical inspiration. The article shows contemporary musical and architectural discussion that cross over from the theoretical to the practical point of view. This is an analysis built up on examples of contemporary architecture which investigates the issues between the two arts and their consequences in practice. The physical manifestation of this approach is to systemize and to analyse the participation of music in contemporary architecture from first thoughts in the design process until the acoustic and music characteristics of the architecture come to question and is examined. Such new relationships demonstrate a connection and a strong tendency towards integration of music and architecture. Architects from the beginning of history have tried to discover relationships between music and architecture and such specific kind of parallel aesthetic, and at the same time the musicians have analysed the composition and structure of the buildings. But especially now we can observe an unusual musical presence in architecture, and vice-versa. The concluding shows the consequences of the Goethe’s metaphor in the practical approach and its continuation in the transformation of the architecture influenced by the music and experienced by the ear. Inclusion of music and sound within all steps of the architectural process creates a possibility to discover a new way of designing. The similar junction in contemporary music composition, by involving spatial aspect to the music can also enrich it. Goethe’s metaphor hardly envelopes the contemporary modification in the relationship between architecture and music. However looking for the music in architecture in a different, extended way that is freed from its functional aspect can give astonishing results.
