Biography

Dr. Eng. Nicole Nawrot has been employed at the Department of Sanitary Engineering since 2016. In 2021, she obtained a PhD in the field of engineering and technical sciences in the discipline of environmental engineering, mining and energy. Doctoral thesis entitled "Heavy metals in urban retention tanks bottom sediments: distribution, source tracking, and evaluation of phytostabilization adaptability and performance of P. australis seedlings" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Ph.D.D. Eng. Ewa Wojciechowska. Nicole Nawrot completed her PhD as part of the InterPhD II Power 3.2 program "Development of an interdisciplinary doctoral study program with an international dimension". Form 2020 to 2023 she was a PI of the Preludium National Science Center project "Processes and pathways of nutrients, selected heavy metal and arsenic removal from surface runoff from the agricultural and urban catchments in floating treatment wetlands". She is the contractor of projects implemented with national funds from the National Science Center and the National Center for Research and Development. Currently, in cooperation with the University of Eastern Finland and Aarhus University, she is implementing a project financed under the Scandium IDUB program entitled “Energy BIOmass CULtivation on marginal soils enhanced with biochar amendments fertilized with by-product in order to reduce nutrients leaching (eBIOCOOL)”. She is a co-author of national and international scientific publications (including JCR). She completed scientific internships at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, La Sapienza University in Rome and Ghent University. She received the Rector's Award for her scientific accomplishments for Young Scientists in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Her research interests include the occurrence of heavy metals in the environment, phytoremediation of polluted sediments, soils and waters, as well as nutrient cycling and eutrophication prevention.
