Investigating the effect of orientation of polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating sensor on its sensitivity to fundamental symmetric and antisymmetric guided wave modes

Abstract

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors offer several advantages such as small size, light weight, ability to be embedded and multiplexed and hence are seen as ideal sensors for structural health monitoring (SHM). They are commonly used for static and quasi-static strain and temperature measurements. Recent research has expanded their application to capturing ultrasonic guided wave (GW) responses. Advances in photonics and the growing use of FBGs in telecommunications have made specialty optical fiber sensors more affordable. One notable development is the polarization-maintaining FBG (PM-FBG), which features artificially induced internal strain, causing birefringence due to the breakdown of circular symmetry. PM-FBGs enable simultaneous measurements of strain and temperature. The current work looks to leverage the lack of symmetry of the PMFBG for distinguishing between the GW modes. The concept is verified analytically and experimentally. The PM-FBG is deployed on a simple structure in two different configurations (orientations) and the difference in the relative sensitivity of the modes is investigated. This to the best of the authors’ knowledge is the first and only work that investigates the effect of orientation on the sensitivity and is the main novelty of the research work carried out. The results indicate that the fast axis has higher sensitivity to A mode when it is aligned parallel to the plate while this is not seen in the other orientation. The research also establishes for the first time that the polarization direction also has a significant bearing in the differential sensitivity of the peaks to the fundamental GW modes
