Investigation and operation problems of metal tanks in Poland

Abstract

The paper consists of three parts concerned with steel cylindrical, vertical tank for liquid fuel. In the first part the present trends in tank design and building in Poland are described. The main are: · reduction of environment contamination danger caused by tank leakage and hydrocarbons evaporation, · increasing capacity of new tanks (100000 m3 and more) due to economic factor - reduction of steel amount per m3 of storage capacity. Both trends results in the change in steel tank structure. In the second part European standards used in tank design and introduced in Poland recently have been commented. In the third part the research connected with tanks done in Poland in the last five years is shown. The research was inspired by the petrochemical industry and is related to operation experience and accidents. Four research works performed at the Gdańsk University of Technology are presented:· the analysis of the wind load on the double-wall cylindrical tank· the analysis of underpressure applied to the tank shell,· the analysis of the influence of the tank settlement on tank wall capacity,· the study of the 100000 m3 tank pontoon floating roof behaviorThe works 2, 3 and 4 were inspired by the industry as the results of signalized operational problems.
