Abstract
"From Sappho to Sibylla. About the women’s research and literary output preserved in the PAS Gdańsk Library early printed books collection (15th-18th c.)" The main purpose of this study was to present women’s research and literary output preserved in the early printed books collection (15th-18th c.) of the PAS Gdańsk Library (PAN Biblioteka Gdańska). The author mentions the phenomenon of women writing and participation in the proces of gaining and transferring knowledge before the 19th century, focusing on showcasing the women authors and their works. The library query resulted in identifying a collection of books – reprints or original editions – inspired or written by 12 women writers: Sappho (664-590 BC), Theano (6th c. BC), Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim (ca 935-1001?), Trotula of Salerno ( -1097), Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), Heloise of Argenteuil (1098/1101?-1164), Cassandra Fedele (1465?-1558), Olimpia Fulvia Morata (1526-1555), Elizabeth Jane Weston (1581–1612), Maria Cunitia (1604-1664), Anna Whithield (16..-16..?) and Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). The study includes 3 annexes: (1) Catalogue of learned women (Catalogus Doctarvm Virginvmet Fæmininarum) from Olympiae Fvlviae Moratae Foeminae Doctissimae Ac Plane Divinae Orationes, Dialogi, Epistolae, Carmina, tam Latina quam Graeca: cum eruditoru[m] de ea testimonijs & laudibus, Bazylea: Petrus Pern 1562, p.189-199, call number: Cf 6959 8°; (2) scans of a bibliograhic dictionary entry („Woman writer”) containing names of ca 500 names of Polish women writers (16-19th c.) from Bibliographic Guide to Polish Literature by K. Estreicher 1870; (3) Women Printers - selected bibliography. The underlying assumption of the study is that women have always been involved to some extent in creating and transferrinng knowledge and experience overcoming the social, cultural and educational limitations imposed upon them. The examples provided in this publication may help us gain deeper insights into the history of women and the nature of human knowledge.
