Abstract

The paper discusses changes of hydro-climatic conditions occurring in the South Shetland Islands and in NW parts of the Antarctic Peninsula in the 1979–2016 years period. These changes are important for evaluation of the transformation of marine and coastal ecosystems. The general feature of these changes was a transition from the strong warming phase to the cooling phase, which took place around the year 2000. The paper presents changes in the annual and seasonal air temperature, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea ice surface at the Bellingshausen and Weddell seas. The strongest decrease of the air temperature is noted during the Antarctic summer; all the stations noted a drop of the annual temperature. The decrease of SST occurs in all months of the year, and it is highly significant. The strongest drop of SST occurs also during summer. The annual surface of ice at the Weddell Sea is growing steadily, with particularly rapid increase of the ice surface observed in February-March. The annual surface of ice at the Bellingshausen Sea after 2000 has ceased to decrease, and there is a slight positive trend in its course.
