Enrichment and characterization of anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with iron reduction (Feammox) by anaerobic digestion and conventional activated sludges
Abstrakt
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron reduction (Feammox) plays a key role in nitrogen cycling, yet its potential for wastewater treatment remains underexplored. A key challenge for its engineering applications is obtaining adequate amounts of Feammox sludge. The study aimed to enrich and characterize Feammox activity using anaerobic digestion sludge (ADS) and conventional activated sludge (CAS), respectively. Feammox activity was successfully established in both sludges within 48–66 days and maintained stability over 160 consecutive days of batch experiments. ADS exhibited a 20–38 % faster Feammox initiation compared to CAS. The organic-rich reject water environment enhanced Feammox activity more effectively than synthetic water. Geobacter and Desulfuromonas were identified as key potential Feammox-functional microorganisms. This study provides insights on the microorganisms, environmental conditions, and metabolic pathways influencing Feammox enrichment from readily available sludges, supporting its engineering applications for sustainable nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment.
