Up-to-date strategies and perspectives towards the extraction and purification of ginkgolides from Ginkgo biloba: A comprehensive review

Abstrakt

Recently, several bioactive compounds (food ingredients) have been extracted and isolated from their natural sources to potentialize their use when substituting food products. For instance, ginkgolides from Ginkgo biloba are strongly explored due to their multiple biological activities, including antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, etc. Unfortunately, a standard extraction, purification and fractionation protocol for ginkgolides is still not reported. This paper discusses the progress toward the extraction of this valuable compound. Particular attention has been devoted to innovative methods and new strategies. The literature reveals that the recovery rates ranged from 37 to 100 %, in which solvent extraction is the preferred primary extraction method while adsorption techniques are usually applied for the isolation of ginkgolides from other co-existing molecules. To some extent, this review noticed that most of the reported purification protocols involve more than three complex processing stages. The recovery rates depend on the age of the plant, extraction technique, and operating extraction conditions. As part of the innovative strategies, deep eutectic solvents have been recently investigated in selective extraction. The main challenge remains in isolating ginkgolides from toxic components (like alkylphenols). After this comprehensive review, recommendations for future research are declared.
