Biography

Piotr Samól is an associate professor (profesor uczelni) in the Department of History, Theory and Monument Preservation at Gdansk University of Technology. He graduated in architecture (M.Sc. Eng.)  and history (B.A.). His researches are focused on the architectural and urban history of Gdansk and Baltic Sea region.

He defended his doctoral thesis (scientifc field: architecture and urban planning) on the architecture of Dominican Churches in the former State of Teutonic Knights in Prussia in 2015 r. (supervisor: prof. Aleksander Piwek). One year later he received the Prize of  Heritage Conservator of Poland and Historical Monuments & Art Conservators Association. In 2017 Piotr Samól defended his second doctorate (scientifc field: humanities, history) titled: "Young City of Gdańsk (1380-1455) and its patrimony" (supervisor: prof. Beata Możejko) which was awarded by Gdansk Society of Science. In 2024, he recieved habilitation-degree based on the dissertation "St. Andrew's Church in Barczewo. History of the transformation of the Franciscan complex" and a series of journal papers under the collective title "New findings on the history of architecture and spatial issues of fortifications guarding the entrance to the Gdańsk port from the 15th to the 20th century".

Piotr Samól conducts an architectural research in many historic buildings of Pomerania, Chełmno land and Warmia (northern Poland). Their results are over 40 scientific and popular publications, including 4 monographs (1 of them as co-author). Twice he was awarded by the Minister of Science and Higher Education (2007-2008 as a student and in years 2024-2027 as a scientist). He achieved a certificated professional qualifications in architecture in 2018. P. Samól is a member of the Pomeranian Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland, the Polish National Committee ICOMOS and the Association of Monument Conservators (Stowarzyszenie Konserwatorów Zabytków).
