Abstract
This paper is devoted to numerical investigations of elastic wave propagation in steel elements. The aim of this study is to conduct numerical analysis and experimental investigations on the propagation of elastic waves in steel elements in the context of damage detection. In particular, this paper is devoted to detection of damage occurring in the form of notch or changed thickness. This approach utilized the fact that any discontinuities existing in structural elements cause local changes of physical material properties which affect elastic wave propagation. Two examples of damaged steel elements are considered as tested models. First analyzed model is a steel beam with locally changed thickness which represents the simplest one-dimensional element. Second example model is a steel plate with relatively small notch and it represents more complicated procedure of damage detection in two-dimensional elements. Obtained results are presented in the form of velocity time signals registered in chosen points of elements. Reflections form damage were identified and indicated.
