Abstract
MutS and MutL proteins are renowned mostly for their functions in well-characterized, post-DNA replication mismatch repair system (MMR). However, there is growing evidence that MMR system is not the only field of action of these proteins. Moreover, involvement in MMR does not even have to be their primary function. There are some reports indicating involvement of MutL in BER, NER and VSP (very short patch repair). MutL protein interacts with MMR proteins such as MutS, MutH, UvrD, ExoX as well as with proteins which do not belong to MMR proteins family: ß and γ subunits of DNA polymerase III and RecA protein. The ability of MutL to interact structurally and functionally with many various proteins makes this protein a perfect candidate for master protein coupling MMR system with other DNA repair mechanisms.
