The aim of this article is to present the results of research into the structure of demand for urban transport as well as its economic consequences. The article begins by considering the nature of the determinants and consequences of the public functionality of urban transport, before going on to discuss the methodology of the structure of demand study within these services. This provides the background for analysis of the results of the aforementioned study in chosen cities and allows the economic consequences to be determined. The annual deficit of urban transport was compared with a hypothetical full reimbursement of revenue lost due to free and reduced fares. The article ends with a presentation of its basic conclusions.
