Abstract
IPTV (Television over IP) is a modern service with a great potential to expand. It uses the IP transport platform, that is already in worldwide operation. At the time of writing, two techniques are used to transport the video and audio data of IPTV: MPEG-2 TS and Native RTP. The two techniques quite definitely have an influence on both quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE). This paper sets out to demonstrate objectively what influences QoS and QoE have on the IPTV service. First of all the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/AVC codecs are compared with each other in a loss-free environment. Then the two IPTV transport techniques are tested in various analysis scenarios. To conclude with, the paper presents an optimisation of the ISO/IEC 13818-1 transport technique based on the MPEG-4/AVC codec. The results obtained are presented in several diagrams, and interpreted. The results deliver valuable insights, and will definitely be of assistance when it comes to designing measures to guarantee quality of service in IP networks and developing methods to measure QoS in IPTV. The paper concludes with a summary and an outlook on further work.
