Using Rule-Based System for Monitoring Marine Navigation Data Processing

Abstract

Processing marine navigational data requires sophisticated software solutions. Typically, specialized tools called processors are analyzing raw data from different sensors. It becomes important to create the monitoring software that is able to validate and verify processing components integrated into the final system. Drools®business rule management platform provides a core business rules engine, web authoring and rules management tools ready to be utilized for a variety of specific tasks and can be used for large systems monitoring. In the paper the Drools® application, so called Monitoring Layer (ML) that monitors marine navigational data processing is proposed. Aforementioned software is an add-on component for environment developed by GMV in the frame of the ESA project. Monitoring Layer is a solution that overwatches base processing system (which it is independent from) execution, learns its behavior patterns and infers problematic situations. Monitoring Layer system integration, architecture and Drools inferring rules are discussed by authors. For validation of implemented software several scenarios based on actual data processing cases were simulated to prove considerable benefits of employing rule management system.
