Solvothermal liquefaction as a pro-ecological method of wood-like waste management

The main scientific goal of the project is to describe the influence of the liquefaction process parameters and the composition of the reaction mixture on the structure and properties of the obtained polyols. The project includes several systematic studies regarding the structure and properties of the obtained products. The work assumes the use of a variety of different homogeneous catalysts as well as modern heterogeneous catalysts which can be easily separated from polyols. This can eliminate the neutralization process, which is necessary in the case of using sulphuric acid. Moreover, searching for more efficient catalysts that can be recycled and used multiple times fits into the trend of “Green Chemistry”.The influence of the type, structure, amount of catalyst on the process, and properties of the obtained materials will be determined. Moreover, the impact of the regeneration process parameters of selected catalysts as well as the number of catalysis cycles on the process efficiency and product properties will be investigated. Another key aspect is determining the impact of the type and structure of the solvent/mixture of solvents on the catalyst activity, process parameters, and properties of polyol. In this project, it is planned to use solvents with different molecular weights and functionality. The impact of the waste type, the level of fragmentation, and the amount of waste on process parameters and material properties will be determined. The influence of reaction time, pressure, temperature, and inert gas flow on the process and properties of the obtained product will be determined. Determining the impact of the basic parameters of this process will allow us to fully define the studied process, as well as determine its ability to increase the scale of the project. The project aims to introduce the know-how which I gathered working in my previous scientific work and cooperation with the industry. This research project will be linked to the future application of wood-like post-use and post-production waste from the wood-like panels such as chipboard, OSB, and MDF panels. Moreover, this type of waste management is preferred by international restrictions and is also an alternative to the current energy recovery of wood waste.
