Abstract
This paper contains detailed guidelines for the layout of the road with rows of trees as sun protection in moderate latitudes. The guidelines include scope and degree of shading street frontage by trees, and the duration of such shading, taking into account other elements of the road. Recommendations were formulated on the author’s own research based on computer simulations of the hours of sun exposure for variants of a street model with different height-to-width ratios, trees placement and N-S and W-E orientation. The results indicate at what distance trees can provide effective sun protection for facades, shading minimum 50% of the surface for at least half the time it is exposed to the sun. In the case of the most favourable layout, greenery can cover more than 90% of the facade on the ground floor.
