Impact of Phase Change Material with Postpyrolytic Char from Recycled Tires as a Carrier on the Properties of Cement Composites
Abstract
This study examines cement composites containing phase change material (PCM) embedded in postpyrolytic char obtained from recycled tires used as a carrier. Composites were prepared with varying char proportions (1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 10%), replacing sand in the mix, corresponding to PCM contents of 0.67%, 2.00%, 3.33%, 4.67%, and 6.67% by weight, with a constant water–cement ratio of 0.50. Tests included chemical composition analysis, microstructure evaluation, compressive strength measurements after 28 and 365 days, and thermal property assessments. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed on char with PCM, pure Rubitherm RT22, and Micronal DS 5040 X (RT22 encapsulated in polyethylene). Specific heat capacity tests on cubic samples with varying PCM levels were compared to a reference composite. Results showed that composites with 6.67% char exhibited 11.31% higher cumulative specific heat and an 18.35% increase in heat capacity while maintaining acceptable strength parameters. However, substituting 10% sand with char-PCM reduced compressive strength by 35.6% after 28 days and 17.1% after 365 days. These findings highlight the potential of tire char as a PCM carrier to improve thermal performance with manageable reductions in strength.
