PROPELLER INVESTIGATIONS BY MEANS OF NUMERICAL SIMULATION

Abstract

The analyses of hydroacoustics are of high interest at the moment due to strong impact of hydroacoustic phenomena on marine environment; the noises, generated e.g. by marine traffic, may be harmful for sea life. The analyses presented here are focused on one of main sources of noises generated by ships, i.e. cavitating propeller. The goal of the work is the assessment of the cavitation phenomenon, carried out with the standard commercial tool. The computational model is based on unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow model. The analysis started with elaboration of the method for modelling the propeller operation behind the hull by proper setup of the inflow conditions based on the results of full scale CFD wake analysis and self-propulsion model tests. The numerical analyses were carried out mainly at model scale so as to enable direct verification of the results on the basis of model tests carried out in the cavitation tunnel of Ship Design and Research Centre (CTO) S.A. Two loading conditions were considered.
