Abstract
The development of composite oxide layers on the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy, their structure and properties have been demonstrated. Two subsequent methods were applied to prepare the composite layers. During the first stage gas oxidation produced a solid oxide layer, and subsequently oxide nanotubes were produced by using an electrochemical method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical analysis, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Raman spectroscopy were used to examine the oxide layers. The results obtained reveal that the composite layers consist of two zones. The electrochemical formation of the outer nanotubular oxide zone occurred if the thickness of the first inner oxide zone was under a certain value. Different groups of nanotubes of various sizes were observed. The results obtained indicate the decreasing corrosion resistance of titanium alloy Ti13Nb13Zr following the appearance of duplex oxide layers on its surface.
