White cabbage in the biofumigation process- expectations and perspectives

Abstract

Health risks related to common use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers raised the interest in alteranative methods of crop protection, among them biofumigation is becoming the most promising. In this process certain natural compounds, mainly degradation products of glucosinolates produced by Brassica species are used to combat pests and microorganisms attacking crops. Increased synthesis of these bioactive compounds can be observed when the crop is attacked by pests or grows on contaminated soil. Our research focuses on white cabbage (B.oleracea var.capitata) which first can be used to clean the soil contaminated with heavy metals (phytoremedation) and then as a substrate for production of biopreparate for crop protection in the process of biofumigation. Our studies show that there is correlation between heavy metal content in soil where the cabbage was grown and the amonut of bioactive compounds in this cabbage, which are important in biofumigation. These results encourage further research on the role of cabbage in phytoremediation and biofumigation of soils.
