The efficiency of biological nutrients removal in WWTP`s "Wschód" in Gdańsk (Poland)
PublicationRozbudowana w latach 1997-99 oczyszczalnia ścieków Wschód w Gdańsku zapewnia wysokoefektywne oczyszczanie ścieków odprowadzanych do wód Zatoki Gdańskiej Morza Bałtyckiego. Zrealizowany układ technologiczny biologicznego oczyszczania ścieków o przepustowości 180 tys. m3 na dobę jest złożony z sześciu reaktorów MUCT, z których każdy współpracuje z dwoma osadnikami wtórnymi. W artykule podsumowano okres pierwszych trzech lat eksploatacji...

Dynamic simulation as a tool for evaluation of the nitrogen removal capabilities at the "Gdańsk-Wschód" WWTP
PublicationCelem badań było przedstawienie możliwości zastosowania złożonego modelu biokinetycznych ASM2d do symulacji procesu usuwania azotu w oczyszczalni ścieków ''Wschód'' w Gdańsku. Szybkość procesów nitryfikacji i denitryfikacji została wyznaczona w warunkach laboratoryjnych za pomocą tzw. testów zlewkowych. Wyniki tych badań zostały wykorzystane do kalibracji modelu, w trakcie której zmieniano wartości tylko 5 parametrów kinetycznych....

Influence of landfill leachate on municipal wastewater treatment - model plant(WWTP-MP)
PublicationAbstract In the current study, wastewater treatment model plant (WWTP-MP) was used to investigate the possibilities of landfill leachate co-treatment together with municipal wastewater. The WWT-MP, designed as an A2O multiphase system, was fed with the raw municipal wastewater (from the WWTP Gdańsk "Wschód'', Qav.=82x103 m3/d) with increasing, from 1 to 5 % (vol.), quantity of landfill leachate (collected from Gdańsk landfill ''Szadółki")....

FATE OF LAS SURFACT ANTS IN WWTPs BASED ON MEASURED CONCENTRATIONS IN WASTEWATER AND SLUDGE
PublicationThe fate of the surfactant LAS in the two different types of Waste Water Treatment Plants has been reviewed: the small “Swarzewo” WWTP (45 000 PE), and large WWTP “Wschód” (760 000 PE). The elimination of LAS from the water stream in Swarzewo (98,7%), is better than that found in Gdańsk (97,6%). In the sludge treatment course, the reduction of LAS in Swarzewo is greater than that in Gdańsk due to the greater biodegradation of LAS...

Elementary analysis and energetic potential of the municipal sewage sludges from the Gdańsk and Kościerzyna WWTPs
PublicationThis paper aims to present municipal sewage sludge (MSS) elementary analysis and energetic potential based on measurement of heat of combustion (higher heating value HHV) and calculation of calorific values (lower heating value LHV). The analysis takes into the consideration water content in sewage sludge, at different utilization stages, in wastewater treatment plants in Gdańsk Wschód and Kościerzyna – Pomeranian Voivodeship....

The role of slowly biodegradable substrate in a full-scale biological nutrient removal activated sludge systems
PublicationThis paper contains futher results obtained at ''Wschod'' WWTP in Gdańsk under transient conditions (spring season) and comparation of similar experiments carried out at a recently upgraded ''Debogorze'' WWTP in Gdynia. The removal of colloidal and particulate fractions resulted in similar effects (reduced process rates) at both plants. For example, the initial denitrification rates (NUR1) were up to 30% lower during the ''conventional''...

Denitrifcation rate in the mainstream deammonification
PublicationThe conventional processes of biological nitrogen removal based on nitrification and denitrification does not fit properly into the concept of the circular economy. As the alternative one should consider the deammonification process, which is a combination of partial nitrification (nitritation) and Anammox processes. It consists of removing ammonium nitrogen from wastewater under anaerobic conditions by a group of autotrophic microorganisms....

Improving denitrification efficiency at the "Wschod" WWTP in Gdansk (Poland) - effects of different carbon sources
Dodatkowo przeprowadzono badanie długości fazy adaptacji osadu do metanolu w...

The PolarScreen™ Estrogen Receptor Competitor Assays for determination of estradiol equivalent concentrations (EEQs) in sewage and drinking water samples.
Open Research DataMunicipal waste waters are one of the main sources of estrogenic compounds in aquatic environments. Feminization of fish downstream of Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) discharges has been observed worldwide. Some estrogenic chemicals, particularly steroid estrogens, are known to cause disruption of the endocrine system of fishes and abnormalities...

Treated wasetewater as a source of humic substances in surface waters
PublicationHumic substances impose substantial effect on the aquatic environment as well as the water organisms and human health. Among other features, the humic acids determine organoleptic properties of surface waters. Therefore explanation of the origin and properties of humic acids in surface waters is one of the priorities of water technology.Recently it was pointed out that in the wastewater treatment process organic compounds characterized...
