Data-driven approach and management platforms as the basis for the smart development of the urban tree canopy

Planting more trees in urban areas is a promising intervention for environmental improvement and providing ecosystem services. However, it faces limitations related to the scarcity of space, high costs, and the often challenging conditions reducing the longevity of trees. Moreover, inconsiderate tree planting might produce unwanted effects. The goal of the Urban ElemenTREE project is to provide an improved, data-driven approach for the smart development of the urban tree canopy. It aims to compare different tree planting practices, identify knowledge gaps and build common ground across numerous different disciplines in terms of evaluating the integrated environmental impacts of trees. The implementation of Urban Living Labs in five European cities, characterised by different environmental and spatial conditions, will facilitate the collection and integration of comprehensive evidence and cross-comparing of various environmental monitoring, modelling and digital survey methods and technological approaches. It will also involve improving or adjusting these tools, making them more easily applicable in other urban areas to investigate specific scenarios faster, more accurately, and more efficiently. Finally, urban ElemenTREE will deliver a new platform for the management of urban tree canopy, bridging the local knowledge and data with the new findings, providing implications for the planning and design practice. The project will contribute to the development of the research infrastructure of the Gdańsk University of Technology and to the creation of new knowledge, resulting in scientific publication, conference presentations etc. The role of Gdańsk Tech as the Main Applicant in the international consortium will raise its profile on the international stage, making it possible to make new academic contacts.
