Abstract
In the paper selected issues relating to communication networks in the services of the environmental monitoring (EM) have been described. It is divided into three main parts: introduction, wire and wireless networks. At the beginning of the basic definitions were explained. The wire part focuses on a plain old telephone service (POTS), an integrated services digital network (ISDN), a digital subscriber line (DSL) and a fiber-optic technology (FOT). On the other hand, the wireless part focuses on short-range wireless networks, cellular networks and satellite networks. Finally, the last section concludes the paper. The advantages and disadvantages of both solutions (wire and wireless) for EM pplication have been presented.
