Abstract
Department of Highway Engineering is divided into two divisions: Road Construction Division and Traffic Engineering Division. The head of Road Construction Division is Prof. J. Judycki. There are nine members of division: professor, three PhD, two MSc, two technicians and secretary. The main areas of research activities are: analysis of flexible, semi-rigid and rigid pavements, resistance of asphalt pavement to permanent deformation, effects of environmental factors on asphalt pavements, use of geosyntetics in road construction, use of industrial waste materials. The important part of Road Construction Division is laboratory where properties of pavement materials can be tested. Laboratory is equipped in modern facilities that is very useful in scientific studies (for MSc and PhD students) and in tests for industry. At present there are many courses carried out in Road Construction Division among others: structural design of road construction, asphalt pavements, maintenance of pavements, theory of pavement structures, pavement materials. There are many achievements in fields of cooperation of Road Construction Division with industry. The main are: projects of new highway pavements A-4 Krakow - Katowice, A-2 Nowy Tomysl - Komorniki, A-2 Konin - Kolo, A-1 Torun - Wloclawek; projects of renovation and reinforcement of main roads in Poland for example By-pass of Trojmiasto, main road Elblag - Kaliningrad and many others.
