Multi-core processing system for real-time image processing in embedded computer vision applications

Abstract

W artykule opisano architekturę wielordzeniowego programowalnego systemu do przetwarzania obrazów w czasie rzeczywistym. Dane obrazu są przetwarzane równocześnie przez wszystkie procesory. System umożliwia niskopoziomowe przetwarzanie obrazów,np. odejmowanie tła, wykrywanie obiektów ruchomych, transformacje geometryczne, indeksowanie wykrytych obiektów, ocena ich kształtu oraz podstawowa analiza trajektorii ruchu. Ang:This paper describes the idea of the multi-coreprogrammable cores architecture for real-time imageprocessing in embedded applications. The authorspropose the architecture of a simple 8-bit processorcore dedicated to low and intermediate level imageoperations. Several cores are connected to a common,128-bit wide data bus by multiplexes and theiroperation is synchronized. The image data on the databus is processed in parallel by all the processor cores.Each core realizes its own part of the image processingalgorithm, what significantly improves the frame rateof the whole system. Apart from a low-level imageprocessing, such as background subtraction, movingobject extraction or geometrical transformation of theimage, also higher level information can be processedand analysed, i.e. object indexing, blob size and shapeestimation or basic trajectory analysis. The systemconsisting of 9 processor cores has been practicallyrealized in FPGA hardware and verified. Theassembler has also been written to provide the tool forsoftware development. Comparing to the typicalhardware approach, the proposed idea is very flexibleand enables the realization of a wide range of low andintermediate level image processing algorithms.
