Point cloud in archaeological and historical survey

Abstract

In the last decade the potential of using the point clouds in archaeological research has been noted. Therefore, a number of guidelines concerning aspects of data acquisition (resolution and format) were developed. They also included the way of searching the imaged area to identify archaeological and historical cultural heritage sites. The purpose of this research was to analyze the point cloud for selected woodland survey. Forest areas in Poland and in the world have specific significance to the cultural heritage. They offer a unique way of combining issues associated with cultural assets and environmental issues. Technology of data acquisition and its analysis allows to explore the mysteries of the past, suppressed throughout history by the polish forests. With the right tools, research discoveries in the area can be made. Using geoinformation tools and relevant algorithms, research can be conducted on large areas and in a way previously impossible. In this article for the selected forest area a series of analyzes to detect the important details of the test area were performed. The analyses were based on a combination of lidar data, the traditional aerial photography and historical imagery and forest maps. In result, the localization of the visible structures of the landscape in the form of inventory map was created.
