Sésame, ouvre-toi: internationalisme phraséologique à contenu universel
PublicationPhraseological units, characterised by their opaque meaning, are the subject of multiple theoretical works. The following article adds to this discussion by providing another interesting example. It analyses the case of the Arabic phraseological unit ‘open sesame’ from the “Ali Baba and the Forty Thievesˮ folk tale, permeating into French, Italian, Polish, Turkish and Japanese – languages distant both linguistically and culturally....

Pin-on-Substrate Gap Waveguide: An Extremely Low-Cost Realization of High-Performance Gap Waveguide Components
PublicationConsidering the limitations of currently available technologies for the realization of microwave components and antennas, a trade-off between different factors including the efficiency and fabrication cost is required. The main objective of this letter is to propose a novel method for the realization of gap waveguides (GWGs) that take advantage of conventional PCB fabrication technology, thus are low cost and light weight. Moreover,...

A Wideband Rotary-Joint-Free H-Plane Horn Antenna With 360° Steerable Radiation Pattern Using Gap Waveguide Technology
PublicationConsidering the limitations of electronically steerable antennas such as limited steering span, gain degradation for large steering angles, complexity, and cost, this article is focused on the design of a simple mechanically steerable H-plane horn antenna. It is shown that since there is no need for an electrical connection between the top and bottom sections of a gap waveguide (GWG), if a sectoral horn is properly designed and realized...

Przydatność białka rybiego w postaci kolagenu lub żelatyny oraz polisacharydu - kapa-karagenu do wytwarzania aktywnych opakowań biodegradowalnych = Usefulness of fish collagen, gelatin and carrageenan for preparation of active biodegradable packages
PublicationSummary - The possibility of use of protein films made of fish collagen or gelatin as well as polysaccharide carrageenan films as carriers of enzymes (lysozyme or lysostaphyne), for preparation of microbiologically active packages, was investigated. It was found that crosslinking of such systems with N-[3(dimethylamino)propyl]-N'-ethylcarboimide (EDC) does not influence the activity of lysozyme immobilized in the films (Table 1)....

Karaś P., Kochanowicz K., Pitek M., Domański P., Obuchowski I., Tomiczek B., Liberek K.: Evolution towards simplicity in bacterial small heat shock protein system// eLife -, (2023), s.1-21
PublicationEvolution can tinker with multi-protein machines and replace them with simpler single-protein systems performing equivalent functions in an equally efficient manner. It is unclear how, on a molecular level, such simplification can arise. With ancestral reconstruction and biochemical analysis, we have traced the evolution of bacterial small heat shock proteins (sHsp), which help to refold proteins from aggregates using either...

Low-Loss Mechanically Tunable Resonator and Phase Shifters in Groove Gap Waveguide Technology
PublicationThis research is focused on the design and realization of high-performance high-power variable phase shifters in groove gap waveguide technology. Specifically, it is shown that the unique characteristic of groove gap waveguides, which is its proper operation without the need for electrical connection between the top and bottom sections of the waveguide, can be used to design mechanically tunable devices. Using the proposed method,...

Microwave Alignment and Displacement Sensors in Groove Gap Waveguide Technology
PublicationThis paper is aimed at presenting highly sensitive microwave displacement and alignment sensors. With this goal, the method of realizing mechanically tunable cavity resonators in groove gap waveguides technology is presented. The resonance frequency of the cavity is then used for displacement sensing. It is also demonstrated that the symmetry properties of a pair of groove gap waveguide cavities can be used to improve the robustness...

A Compact and Lightweight Microwave Tilt Sensor Based on an SRR-Loaded Microstrip Line
PublicationIn this paper, the symmetry property of split ring resonators (SRRs) is exploited to develop a tilt sensor. The sensor is composed of an SRR-loaded microstrip line operating at microwave frequencies. It is shown that the depth of notch in the reflection characteristic of the microstrip is a function of the tilt angle of the SRR. Thus, it can be used for sensing inclination. The sensor benefits from very compact size and light weight....

High Dynamic Range Microwave Displacement and Rotation Sensors Based on the Phase of Transmission in Groove Gap Waveguide Technology
PublicationThis research is focused on the design and realization of displacement sensors in gap waveguide technology. It is shown that with a small but fundamental change in the structure of a conventional gap waveguide, a linear displacement can be sensed. To this end, a unique feature of gap waveguides, i.e. the fact that no electrical connection between the top and bottom parts of the gap waveguide is required, is used. It is further shown...

Data-Driven Surrogate-Assisted Optimization of Metamaterial-Based Filtenna Using Deep Learning
PublicationIn this work, a computationally efficient method based on data driven surrogate models is pro-posed for the design optimization procedure of a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS)-based filtering antenna (Filtenna). A Filtenna acts as a as module that simultaneously pre-filters unwanted sig-nals, and enhances the desired signals at the operating frequency. However, due to a typically large number of design variables of FSS unit elements,...

Design of novel highly sensitive sensors for crack detection in metal surfaces: theoretical foundation and experimental validation
PublicationThe application of different types of microwave resonators for sensing cracks in metallic structures has been subject of many studies. While most studies have been focused on improving the sensitivity of planar crack sensors, the theoretical foundation of the topic has not been treated in much detail. The major objective of this study is to perform an exhaustive study of the principles and theoretical foundations for crack sensing...

Application of the 2-deoxyglucose scaffold as a new chiral probe for elucidation of the absolute configuration of secondary alcohols
PublicationHerein, we present the application of 2-deoxy-D-glucose derivatives as chiral probes for elucidation of the absolute configuration of chiral secondary alcohols. The probes are attached to the studied molecules via glycosylation reaction and the resulting products are examined by a set of standard 2D NMR experiments. The absolute configuration of an oxymethine carbon atom binding the probe is established on a basis of a set of diagnostic...

The transfer of names in various translations of brothers Grimm’s "Rumpelstilzchen"
PublicationVarious scholars point out the transfer of proper nouns as a difficulty. This paper examines the transfer of names in twenty‑one translations of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale originally titled Rumpelstilzchen. The article analyses English,Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, and Japanese editions of this originally German story. The analysis focuses on the true name of a title dwarf and other names provided by the Queen....
